Unidata's Science Gateway is an online space where the academic and research communities can collaborate, share resources, and learn from each other in a classroom, workshop, or virtual setting. The Gateway combines Unidata technologies with the NSF Jetstream2 cloud computing platform and open-source software such as Project Jupyter to create an environment where community members can access, analyze, and visualize real-time and case study Earth system science data easily and efficiently.
Since 2018, Unidata has been offering resources tailored to the instructional requirements of university atmospheric science classes through the Science Gateway project. In that time, nearly 850 users - mostly undergraduates in atmospheric science programs - have been able to take advantage of cloud-based resources to access pre-configured computational notebooks for learning and teaching objectives. As of mid-September, 2022, Unidata has provided Fall 2022 term JupyterHub resources for:
- Regis University
- Southern Arkansas University
- St. Cloud State University
- The University of Colorado
- The University of Oklahoma
While the Unidata Science Gateway has been moderately successful in attaining its objectives up to now, we would like to improve and expand our web presence, building a portal that allows users to more efficiently access educational, computing, and data resources. Unidata staff are working to evolve the gateway into a virtual space where a collection of scientific software tools and data are readily available, allowing gateway users to create straightforward end-to-end scientific workflows using powerful cloud-based tools.
