Job description:  The Center for Atmospheric Sciences at Hampton University (HU) seeks candidates for one (1) postdoctoral associate position beginning as soon as January 1, 2024.  The initial appointment is for one year, and can be extended for two additional years, depending on mutual satisfaction and availability of funding.

Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton.  It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution.  HU established the Center for Atmospheric Science (CAS) in 1996, which led to creation of the Department of Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences in 2007.  This program is part of the School of Science, and has established a reputation of excellence in education, outreach and research, with particular emphasis on satellite applications for atmospheric studies.

Job Duties: The successful candidate will join the research group of Dr. Robert Loughman, and work with researchers and students within the Schools of Science and Engineering at HU.  The research project focuses on instrument characterization and algorithm development research to support the PolCube satellite mission.  The successful candidate will be expected to help mentor undergraduate and graduate students, publish new research findings in high-quality journals, and present at national conferences.  This effort is funded by NASA, and will involve intensive collaboration with colleagues at NASA Langley Research Center.

Qualifications:  A Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, Computer Science, Engineering or a related field is required.  Experience with applying machine learning techniques to data analysis is essential.  Experience with geophysical datasets and knowledge about polarimetry and remote sensing is preferred.  Experience with mentoring undergraduate and graduate researchers is also preferred.

Requirements:  This position requires in-person work at the Hampton University campus.  The candidate must have excellent oral and written communication skills and must be able to interface among applied mathematics, computer science, engineering and atmospheric physics.

    To Apply:

Please submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and a completed Application for Faculty Employment (https://www.hamptonu.edu/docs/faculty/employment.pdf) to: Dr. Robert Loughman at robert.loughman@hamptonu.edu (with "PolCube researcher applicant" in the subject line).  Interested candidates are strongly encouraged to reach out to Dr. Loughman before submitting a full application.
