    The Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) at Colorado State University seeks to fill a social science research position with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) located at the Earth System Research Laboratories (ESRL), Global Systems Laboratory (GSL) in Boulder, CO. The position will be for an interdisciplinary social science researcher with a background in qualitative and quantitative social science research methods to perform stakeholder outreach and conduct research on stakeholders' potential use and understanding of probabilistic and uncertainty-related fire weather products and their numeracy skills, and assist in the development of probabilistic products. This position sits within the Weather Informatics and Decision Support (WIDS) Division and will collaborate with the Fire Weather Testbed (FWT). The incumbent's office will be in Boulder, CO at a Federal building and requires the ability to pass a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI, Tier 1 federal background check). An onsite presence at the laboratory in Boulder, CO, with an option for part-time telework, is desired for this position, but remote work will be considered.

    The social science researcher will provide subject-matter expertise in the areas of mixed-method, qualitative and quantitative interdisciplinary research, and is responsible for working closely with the other members of the WIDS Social and Behavioral Science (SBS) Branch, as well as meteorologists and developers. Research could include assessing risk communication, risk perceptions, and decision-making research aimed at investigating and understanding the weather-related information needs of stakeholders of the wildfire communities who manage wildfires and associated public safety. This research may be conducted solely by the researcher, in partnership with the FWT team, or in collaboration with other external interdisciplinary research entities. Outcomes of these research efforts may be used to identify proposed FWT experiments and evaluations that would address the stakeholders' information needs and associated gaps. In addition to the above mentioned outreach and research activities, the incumbent's responsibilities may also include assistance with conducting and/or supporting the experiments and evaluations that take place in the FWT, which are focused on stakeholders' information needs; writing reports and publications; and presenting findings at scientific meetings and conferences. This position works very closely with the Federal SBS Branch Chief, this position formally reports to a CIRA Associate Director.
