As 2023 comes to a close, it's time to bid adieu to the Cheyenne supercomputer. When Cheyenne became operational at the beginning of 2017, it had more than three times the computing power of its predecessor, Yellowstone.

Over the last seven years, Cheyenne has been a workhorse of Earth system science discovery and a crucial resource for our community. Cheyenne will be officially retired on Dec. 31, and all supercomputing work will continue on Derecho, which has about 3.5 times the computing power of Cheyenne.

    Cheyenne's most impressive stats:

    • 7,000,000,000 + core hours delivered
    • 4,400 + Users of Cheyenne
    • 4,5000 + peer-reviewed publications, dissertations & other works resulting from the use of NSF NCAR HPC systems
    • ~ 1,3000 NSF awards supported
