NCAR's Climate and Global Dynamics (CGD) Laboratory is excited to announce the job opening for a Scientific Software Project Manager III. The ESMF Core Team Manager will ensure that ESMF software addresses today's critical challenges in building large scale, multi-use climate and weather modeling applications from a diverse set of component models. The manager will work with an experienced team of software engineers on projects that support both climate change research and the nation's weather modeling capabilities through models such as the Community Earth System Model (CESM) and NOAA's Unified Forecast System (UFS).

Here is a brief outline of what one would expect to be responsible for in this role.

    • This position carries out strategic technical leadership and day-to-day project management responsibilities for the Earth System Modeling Framework (ESMF) Core Team. ESMF is an open source, high-performance, flexible software infrastructure for building and coupling weather, climate, and related Earth-system science applications. ESMF promotes the interoperability of Earth system model components across organizational boundaries, making it a critical part of the nation's strategy for enabling sophisticated and versatile weather and climate modeling capabilities. It is used across a wide number of US agencies such as NCAR, NOAA, NASA and the US Navy, providing fundamental coupling infrastructure to weather and climate models in the US and internationally.

    • The ESMF Core Team develops and maintains the framework, provides support to the user community, and deploys the tools into community modeling applications. The successful applicant will help provide strategic direction to the ESMF project and will manage this team within a wide range of responsibilities. Some of these responsibilities include setting priorities with the cross-agency ESMF Executive Board and Change Review Board, managing a set of complex, cross-agency projects aimed at deploying infrastructure for earth system science, and coordinating support for a broad community of users.

    • ESMF is supported through external grants from multiple federal agencies and programs. The successful applicant will also be responsible for writing proposals to funding agencies, providing a forward-looking perspective on trends in Earth system modeling and next-generation computing capabilities to enable novel science and technology needs within the framework and the models it supports. Additionally, this position will involve working closely with program managers, scientists and software engineers at constituent agencies, through reporting on current grants and collaborative planning for new opportunities.
