    Posted 02-07-2024 13:51

The Atmospheric Sciences Group in the Department of Geosciences at Texas Tech University seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work in the area of fire weather prediction. The successful candidate will be part of the Modeling and Predictability Group supervised by Dr. Brian Ancell and will serve a two-year appointment working on a project funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The primary goal of the position will be to contribute to the development of a novel, probabilistic, machine learning-based fire weather index, the significant fire parameter, toward operational use at the National Weather Service (NWS).

Duties will include performing simulations with atmospheric convection-allowing models (CAMs), development of machine learning techniques that relate model simulations to past fire data, and research -to-operations activities with NWS forecast offices and the Storm Prediction Center (SPC). Required qualifications include computer programming and analysis experience with languages such as Python, Fortran, or equivalent. Preferred qualifications include familiarity running CAMs such as WRF and MPAS, experience with machine learning algorithms, and prior work with fire weather prediction. The position will require some travel and participation in NOAA testbed activities.
