Hello! I am so excited to be connecting with you all on the Commons! I look forward to e-meeting you all and learning about your research, collaborations, challenges, and successes! To get started, will you tell me about which UCAR, UCP, and NSF NCAR lab and programs do you engage with? Are you a student who has visited? Do you collaborate on a research project? How do you use NSF unidata in your classroom? If you are a staff member, tell us what your lab or program is working on.

When we share our experiences, it can inadvertently lead to more great adventures!

I am still exploring and learning about everything UCAR, UCP, and NSF NCAR do in terms of research and opportunities for scientists, students, and faculty. One of my favorite experiences so far was visiting the NSF NCAR Research Aviation Facility. It's so cool to see how the planes are outfitted for field campaigns.

I wonder what you all find valuable that I don't even know I'm missing!

My group uses NCAR models: currently WRF & MPAS and also uses the WSC for other computing.

I'm a UCAR Member Rep and PACUR member, putting particular effort into the PACUR Community Engagement Fund (PCEF).

At MU we've interacted with UCAR in so many ways to the benefit of faculty and students. We've used WRF and MPAS, we attend workshops, the annual meeting, and our students have been visiting grad students. We are glad UCAR is out there!

I'm a UCAR Member Rep and PACUR member.  Some of my own graduate students have used the CISL computing facilities.  We also heavily use the CM1 model, which I understand is now going to have more formal support (if that's indeed true, that is a wonderful development).  Several other graduate students in our program here at Penn State are WRF users.  We also have several faculty who have used Unidata's Python training resources for atmospheric science and meteorology.

I'm a UCP staff member, and I work with the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) education program of the Center for Ocean Leadership (COL), UCP's newest community program.

The NOSB is an academic competition for high school students that engages students in ocean science, research, policy, and conservation learning, as well as ocean and STEM career exploration. Up to 2,000 students compete in regional competitions held at universities, zoos and aquariums, and nonprofits across the U.S. each year.

COL connects, convenes, and supports collaboration within the ocean science and technology community, represented by a network of affiliate institutions from academic, non-profit, and commercial sectors. We're always exploring new ways to collaborate and partner with other programs at NSF NCAR, UCAR, UCP, and beyond!

I'm a UCAR Member Rep and PACUR member. In the past few years, we have invited multiple NCAR scientists in RAL to give us online seminars and visit us at Texas A&M - Corpus Christi. Our students are very excited to learn from their projects and experiences as a researcher.

Thanks for the replies! It sounds like the modeling tools are definitely important and are being well used. I'm glad to hear that our scientists are making university visits and I appreciate the post reminding us that the Center of Ocean Leadership is now part of the UCAR family under the UCAR Community Programs (UCP). I'm curious... now that the fall semester is upon us, does anyone use COMET MetEd or NSF Unidata in their courses? If so, do you have a favorite MetEd course? How do you use NSF Unidata? Any other suggestions for fellow faculty for teaching tools or resources? I hope you don't mind my questions, I can't help being a curious penguin.
