Scientific & Professional Visits at NSF NCAR and through UCAR's CPAESS

  • 1.  Scientific & Professional Visits at NSF NCAR and through UCAR's CPAESS

    Posted 03-12-2024 14:30

The labs at NSF NCAR each have unique visitor programs where students, post-docs, researchers, and faculty can come to NSF NCAR to participate in collaborative research. UCAR's CPAESS also administers a number of programs on behalf of other scientific institutions. We invite you to review the information below and consider a scientific visit.

    Research Applications Laboratory (RAL)

Our Visitor Program is thriving, and all we need is you! Many of our esteemed staff were once visitors themselves. Each year, we host a variety of visitors ranging from students to university faculty, to researchers from all over the world. The networks and relationships broadened by this initiative have proven invaluable to the excellent work we can do. The Visitor Program is the lifeblood of our organization.

Is RAL currently accepting visit requests? RAL definitely accepts visitors at all times!

Is RAL currently accepting visit requests? We do require that visitors have hosts, especially if they require funding, so members should reach out to someone in our lab whom they think would benefit from their visit.

What is the average length of a visit at RAL? Our visitors stay anywhere from 3 days to 6 months - it all depends upon what they are doing.

What else should people know about the RAL visitor program? RAL has a very extensive, very active visitor program.  We host approximately 200 visitors per year.

    High Altitude Observatory (HAO)

The mission of the High Altitude Observatory's (HAO) visitor program is to increase our understanding of physical systems relevant to the Sun and their effects on the Earth by promoting interactions between highly qualified researchers in a supportive, enthusiastic environment.

This program invites applications for short-term visits and provides financial support for these visits. Appointments are available to undergraduate and graduate students, post-graduate researchers, and established researchers seeking sabbatical leave opportunities.

Is HAO currently accepting visit requests? Yes

Does HAO have a certain time frame when visits are allowed? Our program accepts visitors year-round.

What is the average length of a visit at HAO? Average length for financially supported visitors is 1 month. Visit duration varies greatly and depends on the visitor's research goals and interests.

What else should people know about the HAO visitor program? We accept visit requests for undergraduates, graduates, Postdocs, and scientific professionals.

Atmospheric Chemistry Observations & Modeling (ACOM)

Is ACOM currently accepting visit requests? Yes, depending on the funding source.

Does ACOM have a certain time frame when visits are allowed? We accept visits throughout the year, but since we decide on lab funded requests around March, those visitors are usually here in the summer months.

What is the average length of a visit at ACOM? 2 weeks to a month

What else should people know about the ACOM visitor program? Visit requests come to the coordinator from the hosts, so faculty can work with a colleague at ACOM to set up a visit.

We have our Ralph Cicerone Fellowship which is a great opportunity for grad students: https://www2.acom.ucar.edu/ralph-cicerone-fellowship

Computational & Information Systems Laboratory (CISL)

CISL regards collaboration with university faculty, practitioners in high-performance computing, new researchers, and students as central to its mission to support the atmospheric and related sciences. As a national center, we depend on a diverse and vigorous visitor program to engage the community and to contribute to our scientific mission.

Is CISL currently accepting visit requests? Yes

Does CISL have a certain time frame when visits are allowed? Requests can be made year-round

What is the average length of a visit at CISL? Funded visits are typically 2 weeks to 3 months in length. Unfunded visits can be anywhere from 1 day to 6 months.

What else should people know about the CISL visitor program? Currently we have a CISL Visitor Program (CVP) committee of representatives from each division within the lab. The CISL Executive Leadership Team (CELT) and CVP representatives are in the process of rotating CVP members and revamping the visitor program in an effort to streamline the process for both staff and visitors. Visitors must have an established relationship with a staff member. We do not match visitors with hosts.

    Earth Observing Laboratory (EOL)

Is EOL currently accepting visit requests? Our science group puts out regular calls for potential visits but there is no particular 'open' or 'closed' season for visitors.

Does EOL have a certain time frame when visits are allowed? Visits are allowed anytime.

What is the average length of a visit at EOL? Completely dependent on goals. Some are for a week, some are for months.

    Mesoscale & Microscale Meteorology (MMM)

The visitor program of the Mesoscale and Microscale Meteorology (MMM) Laboratory at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) aims to bring new ideas to invigorate the science and stimulate the research. MMM's mission is to advance the understanding of the meso- and microscale aspects of weather and climate. We encourage and support collaboration between our staff members and foreign and domestic researchers at universities, private institutes, and governmental agencies.

Is MMM currently accepting visit requests? Yes! We accept requests year-round!

Does MMM have a certain time frame when visits are allowed? Visits can be anytime of year!

What is the average length of a visit at MMM? They are often a few days to several months, but they can range from a one-day visit to a year!

What else should people know about the MMM visitor program? Twice a year, we also plan to host virtual MMM Visitor Open Houses. (The next one is not scheduled yet.) These Open Houses are a terrific way to learn more about our Visitor Program!

Please reach out to Nancy Sue Kerner (nskerner@ucar.edu) if you have any questions about the MMM Visitor Program!

    Climate & Global Dynamics (CGD)

CGD maintains creative collaboration mechanisms to leverage scientific contributions from throughout the NCAR program as well as from external university partners. The CGD scientific visitor program nurtures and maintains long-term scientific interactions with university and national laboratory collaborators. CGD's visitor program provides the opportunity for long-term scientific visits, along with investment in local infrastructure support to ensure collaborators can make the most productive use of their time. Strategic partnerships with other NCAR laboratories exists which employs mechanisms to better facilitate long-term collaborative visits. Enhanced interactions with the university community allows CGD to play a more direct role in the education and training of the next generation of students.

    CPAESS Opportunities

Short-term Research Collaboration Opportunities at NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP)

Managed by UCAR's Cooperative Programs for the Advancement of Earth System Science (CPAESS)

We are seeking research project proposals from scientists in academia, government laboratories, non-profit and private sectors to interact with colleagues at NCEP.

NCEP delivers national and global weather, water, climate and space weather guidance, forecasts, warnings and analyses to a broad range of users and partners. These products and services respond to user needs to protect life and property, enhance the nation's economy, and support the nation's growing need for environmental information.

Applications are accepted at anytime, and are reviewed on a rolling basis.
