This summer, our campuses are alive with interns and student visitors representing universities and colleges across the country. In total there are 114 interns in their undergraduate or graduate studies participating with an NSF NCAR or UCAR lab or program, the vast majority of whom are on campus this summer.
Internship Highlight: NESSI
Among the internship programs offered each summer is NSF NCAR Earth System Science Internship (NESSI). Hosted by EdEC, NESSI offers students interested in the Earth system sciences an opportunity to conduct research alongside NSF NCAR scientists from across all labs on a wide range of topics including but not limited to atmospheric science, computational science, engineering, social science, and solar & space physics. The program is designed to support students and promote Earth system science through research, mentoring, and community building.
This summer, the NSF NESSI cohort is composed of 8 students (6 undergraduates and 2 graduate students) representing Colorado College, Howard University, Metropolitan State University of Denver, San Diego State University, the University of Arizona, the University of California Davis, the University of Colorado, and the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez. Student projects this summer range from understanding the physical processes behind teleconnections such as the El Niño Southern Oscillation, to researching the impact of agroforestry practices, to learning how science is communicated to communities and how those communities process that information, and more.
