    We invite you to submit an abstract to the Atmospheric Rivers: Processes, Impacts, and Communicating Uncertainty session in the 40th Conference on Climate Variability and Change at the 107th AMS Annual Meeting.

    Session abstract:

    Atmospheric rivers (ARs) are powerful corridors of moisture that play a vital and dual role in the earth system . They contribute significantly to weather and climate, often through heavy precipitation along the western coasts of mid-latitude continents, where they can produce major flooding events and/or relieve droughts. ARs can also interact with other Earth system processes and associated hazards, including ocean–atmosphere coupling, cryospheric processes, and hydrologic responses. Understanding how ARs vary on subseasonal-to-interdecadal and local-to-global scales, and change in a warmer climate, is critical to advancing the understanding and prediction of their diversified impacts on the environment and human society. 

    Quantifying uncertainty in AR science, which may originate from detection methodologies, reanalysis products, initial condition, and model error or spread, plays a crucial role in assessing confidence in process-level and impact-oriented AR analysis and predictions. Communicating risk and uncertainty associated with AR impacts to communities and decision-makers is also essential for informing adaptation and establishing resilience to high-impact AR events that can result in flooding, landslides, high wind damage, heat stress, and melting of sea ice, snow, and glaciers. Continuing this session from past years, and in the context of these AR-related challenges, this session will focus on AR science, impacts, and uncertainty quantification across a range of scientific foci and spatiotemporal scales. We welcome submissions covering a broad range of topics, including but not limited to:  AR development and driving mechanisms, dynamical and thermodynamical responses, linkages with multi-scale climate variability and predictability, climate change, compound events, and impacts on different components of the Earth system. Submissions that integrate uncertainty quantification within their analysis are especially encouraged as we seek to bridge the gap between fundamental science and actionable information. .
