Postdoctoral Research Associate in evaluating flood risk management and NYC water supply reliability in the Catskill and Delaware River watersheds

Description: The Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences at the University at Albany is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to perform research on the characteristics and predictability of rainfall events over the Catskill mountains that impact the NYC water supply. We seek to understand how predictability depends on forecast lead time, modeling system, and weather-event type (e.g., atmospheric rivers). Datasets of interest may include, but are not limited to, ensemble reforecasts of global numerical weather prediction (NWP) models, high-resolution NWP output, operational weather radars, and New York State Mesonet observations. This research is in collaboration with the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes (CW3E) and the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

    Qualifications:

    • Ph.D. in atmospheric science, or related discipline, conferred within the last three years, from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization. The Ph.D. must be conferred before the start date of the postdoctoral position.
    • Experience analyzing numerical weather prediction output
    • Experience with meteorological data analysis and visualization, preferably with Python
    • Ability to work both independently and as a team
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills

    Start: August 2025, or earlier

Appointment: One year, renewable for one additional year

    Location: Albany, New York

How to apply: Applicants are asked to submit electronically:

    • A curriculum vitae
    • The names and contact information of three individuals who can provide a letter of reference
    • A personal statement – which should discuss your past research, professional goals, and ability to work with others

Please submit the application materials, as a single PDF, to Dr. Justin Minder (jminder@albany.edu) and Dr. Brian Tang (btang@albany.edu).

    Application deadline: May 9, 2025
