CGD Seminar: 2022 Pakistan floods & Simulating mountain glacier dynamics and geometry changes with the Community Ice Sheet Model (CISM)

06-18-2024 13:10

Speaker: Samar Minallah

This is a two-part presentation on the 2022 floods in Pakistan and the high-mountain Asia glaciology: 2022 Pakistan floods Last year, Pakistan experienced unprecedented flooding that affected over 33 million people and resulted in economic losses exceeding $30 billion. This was preceded by a record-breaking heat wave in the spring and the wettest Monsoon period since 1961. The first part of the presentation will provide an overview of the flooding events, what made them particularly devastating, and a summary of the related attribution studies. Simulating mountain glacier dynamics and geometry changes with the Community Ice Sheet Model (CISM) Mountain glaciers have significance as freshwater reservoirs feeding large river networks. They are also one of the most susceptible natural resources to climate change which has severe consequences for downstream hydrology. The second part of the presentation will provide a summary of our ongoing work on glacier dynamics, geometry changes, and glacial hydrology within the CESM framework.
