PRESENTER: Murali Nageswara Rao Malasala, CPAESS Associate Scientist-II, NOAA NCEP EMC Title: Hybrid Post-Processing of NOAA NCEP GEFSv12 Reforecasts for Ensemble Probabilistic Forecasting of Extremes in Summer Maximum Temperature and Rainfall on a Sub-seasonal Scale Dr. Malasala is an accomplished Meteorology and Oceanography expert with over 18 years of Academic and R&D experience, currently serving as UCAR Associate Scientist-II at NOAA NCEP's Environmental Modeling Center (EMC). He earned his Ph.D. and master’s in meteorology and physical Oceanography from Andhra University. Dr. Malasala specializes in enhancing weather and climate forecasts through advanced downscaling techniques, focusing on model climatology and diagnostic analysis globally. He uses methods like the Quantile-Mapping (QM), Frequency Match Method (FMM), Machine Learning (ML) and Deep learning models to improve forecast accuracy for Temperature and rainfall extremes, particularly atmospheric rivers and associated precipitation over the US West Coast. The Cooperative Programs for the Advancement of Earth System Science (CPAESS—pronounced: see-pass) is a UCAR Community Programs (UCP) division at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR). UCAR manages the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). Our administrative office is located in Boulder, Colorado, USA. CPAESS was created in February 2016, from the merger of two long-established and successful programs: the Joint Office of Science Support (JOSS) and the Visiting Scientist Programs (VSP). CPAESS is providing an extensive portfolio of organization and management services for the broad Earth science community. Our vision and mission complement and mirror the vision and mission of UCAR, including UCP and NCAR. We are collectively working towards the advancement of scientific research for the benefit of society.
