EOL Seminar: Vertical Profiles of Bromine Monoxide via Airborne Remote Sensing

06-27-2024 10:15

Speaker: Dr. Nathaniel Brockway - University of Alaska

The CHemistry in the Arctic: Clouds, Halogens, and Aerosols (CHACHA) field campaign took place in Utqiagvik, Alaska during the spring of 2022. This campaign utilized two research aircraft and a ground-based research station to study the chemistry of ozone depletion events. This talk will focus on observations from the Heidelberg Airborne Imaging DOAS Instrument (HAIDI), which was used in conjunction with a unique flight technique to retrieve high-resolution profiles of bromine monoxide in the lower atmosphere with considerably higher vertical resolution than previous observations. The resulting profiles will be discussed, as well as their implications for Arctic chemistry. This measurement technique could also be extended to more light aircraft/drones to study the background atmosphere, pollution plumes, etc.
