Reanalysis and data assimilation section at NOAA Physical Sciences Lab conducts a variety of research, research-to-operations, and reanalysis production activities that support future weather forecast and climate monitoring capabilities at NOAA. In this talk, I will present some of our ongoing research activities, such as (1) the transition of the JEDI ensemble Kalman Filter into future NOAA operational systems; (2) development of the multiscale models for the Atmospheric River forecasting, and (3) using data assimilation systems to estimate and correct systematic errors in forecast models. I will conclude the talk by focusing on the emergence of credible emulators of traditional forecast models and on how we can respond to this new challenge and opportunity.
