The Department of Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (APS) at Hampton University (HU) is accepting applications for fully funded graduate student research assistantships (M.S. and Ph.D.) to start in Fall 2026. We are a growing Department with currently six professors (four in Atmospheric Science and two in Planetary Science).

Why choose HU and APS for graduate education and research?

    (1) A small University with a high faculty to student ratio ensures students receive quality time they need to build knowledge, ask questions and advance their careers.

    (2) Access to a very unique set of instrumentation for remote sensing (phased array radar, satellite data receiving antenna and lidar)

    (3) Access to a new high performance computing (HPC) cluster that will allow for detailed simulations of extreme weather and global climate.

    (4) Close proximity to NASA Langley and other federal agencies for internships, collaborative research and job prospects.

    (5) Beautiful campus setting right on the water and short drive to popular beaches such as the Outer Banks.

    Faculty Expertise:

Dr. Robert Loughman (Radiation, aerosols, remote sensing)

Dr. Ruben Delgado (Chemistry, air quality, lidar)

Dr. Stephen Guimond (Geophysical fluid dynamics, extreme weather, radar and modeling)

Dr. Mariel Friberg (Wildfires, satellite applications, data fusion)

Dr. William Moore (Planetary science, geodynamics)

Dr. Orenthal Tucker (Planetary exospheres and atmospheric escape, gas modeling)
